Professor Howard Morris receives Franklin Medal and Prize

Congratulations to Professor Howard Morris (Imperial College London, UK) who on Wednesday 3 October 2012 received his Franklin Medal and Prize from the Institute of Physics.

Professor Morris, a Biochemical Society member, was awarded for his contributions to mass spectrometer design which revolutionised peptide sequencing and fuelled the proteomics revolution. Howard Morris is regarded by many as the founding father of modern Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry (MS). Today MS is critical for the structural characterization of protein and glycoprotein products from the world’s biotechnology and pharma industries, and the origins of today’s key strategies and instrumentation lie in Morris’s pioneering research efforts.

The Franklin Medal is named after Rosalind Franklin who did pioneering X-ray work leading to the structure of DNA.
