Professor Janet Thornton in Queen’s Birthday Honours List

Professor Janet Thornton, CBE, a member of the Biochemical Society, was made a Dame in the Queen's Birthday Honours list announced on 16 June 2012.

Professor Thornton is director of the European Bioinformatics Institute and receives her DBE (Dame of the British Empire) for services to Bioinformatics.

Dame Thornton is one of the world’s leading researchers in structural bioinformatics; she was an early pioneer in structure validation for protein crystallography and developed the widely used ProCheck software. Together with Professor Christine Orengo, she introduced the CATH classification of protein structure.

Dame Thornton was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1999.
